15 Minutes Of Avatar For Free On August 21
During the presentation for his highly-anticipated 3-D film Avatar at Comic-Con on Thursday (July 23), James Cameron announced to much excitement that come August 21st, Fox will be showing 15 minutes of footage from the movie at select IMAX 3D and digital 3D theaters for free! Those lucky enough to have been present at the Avatar presentation on Thursday were treated to 25 minutes of footage from the movie. The footage showed what audiences will be seeing in the movie: an introduction to the character of Jake, and the glow-in-the-dark bodies of the Na’vi (the aliens in the film). The rest of us who missed Comic-Con this year will get the opportunity to feast our eyes on this footage come August 21.
According to a press release by Fox, the trailer for the movie will also be released on August 21. Here’s the statement from Fox: “The worldwide trailer launch will be presented in all formats, including IMAX 3-D, IMAX 2-D, digital 3-D, digital 2-D, and 35mm 2-D. The trailer will also be available online. The extended (15 minute) look at Avatar will unspool only on August 21 – and only in 3-D – in select theaters and IMAX. Details on locations and reserving tickets for this extraordinary and unprecedented experience will be announced soon.”
This is certainly a marketing campaign of unprecedented proportions.

Gary Oldman Says Batman 3 Will Start Shooting Next Year
Here’s one of the most fascinating pieces of information to have come out of this year’s Comic-Con: Gary Oldman (who plays Commissioner Gordon) has let loose to fans at Hall H that the next Batman movie will start shooting next year! We have to take this news with a grain of salt, as nothing has been announced by Warner Brothers so far. But those present at the convention said that Oldman seemed pretty confident when he made the revelation, although he added, “you didn’t hear it from me.” Gary Oldman isn’t the kind of guy to go around making wild guesses.
Director Christopher Nolan is currently shooting Inception, which will be released on July 16 of next year. So perhaps he’ll start the Batman sequel immediately afterward if the script is ready by then. So far, we don’t know what to make of this news.
Where the Wild Things Are Featurette from Comic-Con
This featurette was shown at a presentation for Spike Jonze’s Where the Wild Things Are at the film’s panel during Comic-Con on Friday (July 24). The movie’s star Max Records (funny name, huh?) made an appearance and gave a really funny speech. The featurette has footage from the film, as well as the author of the children’s book Maurice Sendak speaking about his experiences working with Spike Jonze.
Where the Wild Things Are is directed by the gifted Spike Jonze, who also co-wrote the script with author Dave Eggers. The film will be released by Warner Brothers on October 16.

Pirates of the Carribean 4 Starts Shooting In 2010
This is a really exciting time for all movie buffs. Comic-Con is in progress in San Diego all throughout this weekend, and brand new updates on the most highly-anticipated upcoming movies are spewing forth from the convention on an hourly basis. Disney’s Head of Production Oren Aviv gave an interview on Thursday (July 23) to ComingSoon, and in it he revealed that Disney is planning to start shooting Pirates of the Carribean 4 in April or May of next year (2010). And furthermore, he said that this one will be the first in a brand new trilogy! “It’s important to get the story right and it’s important to me to scale it down, because we can’t get bigger,” Aviv said. “The movies have subsequently gotten bigger and bigger and very complicated and they were satisfying on so many levels obviously, but I want to kind of reboot the whole thing and bring it down to its core, its essence, just characters.”
Until now, only Johnny Depp is confirmed to return as Jack Sparrow. The film will hit theaters in 2011.
Shooting of Wanted 2 To Begin Soon
Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov showed up at this week’s Comic-Con and gave some fans some new info on Wanted 2, and who might be in it. He was at the panel for Shane Acker’s 9 yesterday (July 24), and confirmed that James McAvoy will return as Wesley Gibson. He also revealed that he trying to bring back Angelina Jolie’s character, despite her death in the last film. It seems obvious that it wouldn’t be a bright idea to leave out the character that was one of the reasons for the last film’s huge success. One way in which she could be back, Bekmambetov hinted, was if she was shown to have fallen into a healing wax bath and hence survived.

Two New Posters for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Empire has just released two promotional posters from Disney’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The first photo of Jake Gyllenhaal as Prince Dastan looks quite good, but we’re not so sure about the one of Gemma Arterton as Princess Tamina. Arterton’s poster looks a lot like a magazine cover, but she looks gorgeous. The plot revolves around Prince Dastan and Princess Tamina’s attempt to protect a magical dagger that allows it’s owner to travel through time and hence control the world. The film co-satrs Ben Kingsley as the villain Nizam, and Alfred Molina in an unspecified role. Here are the posters:
