Alien Trespass Review

Posted by Faiyaz On April - 3 - 2009

B grade is B grade. This is crappy stuff.

With so many films being remade or re-imagined it is refreshing to see a wonderful fun cinematic mash-up. The story of an alien invasion in a small town in the middle of Mojave desert, “Alien Trespass,” is fun, campy throwback to sci-fi films of the 1950s.

A small community in the Mojave desert receives a major jolt when a spaceship crash lands in the middle of the desert. The crash unleashes a deadly hunter, the Ghota a one-eyed creature that looks like a more mobile version of the plant from “Little Shop of Horrors.” With the ability to make himself invisible and featuring several plant-like arms that entrap you, the Ghota’s speciality is feeding on humans only leaving water and nutrients in a gooey puddle.

Hot on his trail is an alien commander, Urp (Eric McCormack) who commandeers the body of an unsuspecting scientist, Ted Lewis (again McCormack) “Invasion of the Body Snatchers-style.” Described as a federal marshal who enforces security in this quadrant, Urp is trying to stop the dreaded Ghota before he devours the population of this small town and splits in half putting all humans in peril.

He is aided in his search by a waitress, Tammy (Jenni Baird) who has a crush on the supposed scientist Lewis and she is the only other person in town that knows that a monster exist and of course figures out how to stop it.

Peppered with colorful characters, references to the time period and that groovy, scary sci-fi score, “Alien Trespass is a campy delight that will bring back fond memories of horror movies from the 1950s. Liberally borrowing from almost a half dozen films, director R.W. Goodwin creates a scene where moviegoers are watching the famous scene from “The Blob” where moviegoers exit the theater in sheer terror. The effect of us watching them, watching THEM is not only an inspired piece of filmmaking but plenty of fun as well.

“Alien Trespass” is the movie where characters do things that make no sense, many of the people don’t believe that there is a real threat and nobody can figure out that something is a little different with Mr. Lewis. It is precisely all of those qualities and Goodwin’s attention to detail that makes this little campy nugget work so well!

By the time we get the inevitable “The Day the Earth Stood Still” speech, it’s not just alien Urp who is left to ponder Tammy’s “polarity,” but how to quiet the audience’s hilarity!

It is funny enough to release this movie.

Warner Bros debuted the full-length theatrical trailer for Chris Nolan’s Inception in theaters in front of Iron Man 2 a few days back. There aren’t many words to describe how incredibly epic and amazing this looks, but beautiful and stunning and mesmerizing are a few that fit best. Watching this trailer, you will agree that Inception is the most anticipated movie this summer. This just looks so phenomenal.

Inception is both written and directed by acclaimed Oscar nominated British filmmaker Christopher Nolan, of Memento, Insomnia, Batman Begins, The Prestige and The Dark Knight. Nolan previously co-wrote the scripts for Memento, Batman Begins, The Prestige, and The Dark Knight with his brother Jonathan Nolan. Warner Bros is bringing Inception to theaters starting on July 16th this summer.
