Half Blood Prince Breaks Record For Midnight Gross

The early performance figures are in for Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, and they are mightily impressive! The film opened at 3,003 theaters all across America at 12.01 am on Wednesday. Variety is reporting that the film grossed a mind-boggling $22.2 million from midnight showings alone yesterday (July 15)! This makes it the record-holder for the largest midnight gross of all time, beating the The Dark Knight‘s previous record of $18 million. The previous stunner this year was Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen , which took in $16 million at midnight showings across the country. What’s astonishing is that Half Blood is aimed at a younger target audience and their families than either Revenge or The Dark Knight, and we normally don’t expect them to show up in theaters at midnight. But I guess we were all wrong. After two years of waiting, fans just can’t get enough of Harry and pals. We can’t wait till more numbers come in!
