In Blow

Blow is probably the best of all drug mafia movies. Yes, it is probably better than Scarface, American Gangster, and any other. What touches you most about Blow that it is a true story and almost scene by scene adopted. Blow has the thrills of “oh! Could this really had happened” and also emotion of “life is so cruel”. But what makes Blow apart from all other classics from the same genre is the character George Jung played by Johnny Depp. And kudos to Depp for delivering one of the best performances ever seen on silver screen.

In the very start of his life Jung realizes the value of money and its probable mastery over all other things. The character is hip and very natural. Just like Captain Jack Sparrow, Depp must had lived this character while he was doing it. Because he was so God damn natural. He walked like George Jung, smiled like him, talked like him, thought like him, and also, kept silent like him.

The beauty of George Jung’s characterization in the film is that you want to so be the drug dealer with endless money and be kool like him and at the same time, you so do not want to be the father who longs for his daughter to visit him in jail once, and who breaks his promise to his daughter and cites its as “the only guilt” of his life. Boston George’s character had all the shades. His first love dies at the first hour of the movie and once his mother betrays him and delivers him to the law. All the allies he ever had cheat him one after another. The less said about his wife played by Penelope Cruz the better. But not to forget that once he steals the fiancé of a dreaded drug dealer and marries her and on another instance he had so much money that the toilets of the apartment were also filled with $100 bills and counting.

Towards the ending of the film, George became only a father and nothing else. He continues to be the kool person he once was from outside but in the inside- he was only a father left. His everyday and every move evolved around his daughter. Completely broke, George tries one last scheme to have the money to run away with his daughter, but alas! The man who had never been caught in the immigrations and customs of many airports before, could not pull the last action off and fell endangered of never being able to see his daughter again.

It is true that towards the end, George or Depp melts your eyelids and maybe some of you will not be able to forgive the crimes he committed in earlier life. But folks, one thing is for sure: George Jung in Johnny Depp is so Gawd Damn Kool !
